Seventeen-year-old Snow has spent the majority of her life within the walls of the Whittaker Institute, a high-security mental hospital in upstate New York. Deep down she knows she's not crazy and doesn't belong there. When she meets a mysterious, handsome new orderly and dreams about a strange twisted tree, she realizes she must escape and figure out who she really is. Using her trusting friend, Bale, as a distraction, Snow breaks free and races into the nearby woods. Suddenly everything isn't what it seems.

The tyrannous huntsmen have declared the residents of Nearby Village to be outlaws, since they insist on supporting the magical beings of neighbouring Darkwood. Why won't they accept that magic is an abomination? Far from being abominable, the residents of Darkwood are actually very nice when you get to know them - even Snow the White Knight, who can get a bit tetchy when people remind her she's a princess. In order to stop the huntsmen from wiping out all magical beings, Snow and her friends have to venture into the badlands of Ashtrie, and seek the support of the Glass Witch.

Which sounds pretty cool except Caleb's ability is extreme empathy - he feels the emotions of everyone around him. Being an empath in high school would be hard enough, but Caleb's life becomes even more complicated when he keeps getting pulled into the emotional orbit of one of his classmates, Adam.
