On 1 July 1916, Douglas Haig's army launched the "Big Push" that was supposed finally to bring an end to the stalemate on the Western Front. What happened next was a human catastrophe: scrambling over the top into the face of the German machine guns and artillery fire, 19,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers were killed, the greatest loss in a single day ever sustained by the British Army. The battle did not stop there, however.

The Somme offensive was intended to achieve a decisive victory for the British and French Allies over the Germans, yet the Allies failed to achieve all of their objectives and the war was to continue for another two years. More than a million men from both sides became casualties in the long and bitter struggle on the Somme in 1916. This audiobook tells this story through the unique collections of IWM.

The battle of the Somme was the largest battle of the first world war, in which over one million men were killed or wounded, and during which the British army suffered its worst day ever with over sixty thousand casualties. The Commander in Chief of the British forces, Sir Douglas Haig, issued a despatch in the following month via the London Gazette. Part news, part propaganda this despatch failed to mention the tragic losses and maximised the minimal gains.

Using original archives from the Western Front, this historic account uncovers the stories of seven men whose remarkable bravery in 1916 won them the Victoria Cross, Britain’s most prized military medal. Interviews with modern-day family members reveal the personal stories of each man, exploring the differing fortunes they experienced and the variety of reasons for which they fought.

Kein Angriff erfolgte, ohne vorher das gegnerische Stellungssystem mit größtem Artillerieeinsatz zu bearbeiten. Auf der Seite der Verteidiger genügten meist wenige Maschinengewehre, um auch stärkste Angriffe zum Stehen zu bringen. Über Jahre hinaus konnte keine der Kriegsparteien entscheidende Vorteile erringen. Ende Juni 1916 begannen die Briten an der Somme eine Offensive, nachdem auf den deutschen Stellungen ein siebentägiges Trommelfeuer gelegen hatte.

Paralysis. Stuttering. The shakes. Inability to stand or walk. Temporary blindness or deafness. When strange symptoms like these began appearing in men at casualty clearing stations in 1915, a debate began in army and medical circles as to what it was, what had caused it and what could be done to cure it. But the numbers were never large. Then, in July 1916, with the start of the Somme battle, the incidence of shell shock rocketed.
