La spéculation avait fait passer la valeur d'une action de 128 livres à 1050 livres, avant de s'effondrer ruinant bon nombre de commerçants britanniques. Cet accroissement puis cette miniaturisation de la richesse en un temps très court a dû donner à Swift l'idée des changements de taille relative de son personnage principal qui serait une métaphore de ce krach en donnant à Swift l'occasion de se moquer des travers de la société de son temps.

Auf der nächsten Odyssee nehmen Piraten Gulliver gefangen und er landet auf der Insel Laputa, deren Bewohner vor lauter geistigen Höhenflügen die Menschlichkeit verlernt haben.

Als Gullivers Reisen 1726 erschien, wurde es schnell zum Jugendbuchklassiker. Doch Jonathan Swift schrieb seine Geschichte mit einer derart scharfen Feder, dass auch Erwachsene sie durchaus mit Gewinn lesen können. "Es birgt scharfsinnige Gesellschaftsbeobachtungen und Psychogramme, entlarvt den korrupten, geld- und machtgeilen, selbstsüchtigen, bequemen Zivilisationsmenschen, den wir kennen und hassen, auch und vielleicht besonders in uns selbst" (FAZ). In seiner Geschichte erzählt Swift von Gulliver, der auf einem Schiff anheuert und bald als Arzt an Bord tätig ist.

"Gullivers Reisen" sind und bleiben ein grandioses, großen Abenteuer für Groß und Klein. Aber wer kennt Gullivers vierte Fahrt? Die Reise zu den Houyhnhnms? Ein wunderseltsames Land. Und wunderseltsame Wesen sind auch die Houyhnhnms. Edle Pferde, die sprechen können und den Menschen überlegen sind. Gulliver, verfremdet als Tier, wird von den Houyhnhnms zunächst nicht als gleichwertiger Partner aufgenommen. Wie auch? Halten sich die Pferde doch menschenähnliche Geschöpfe, die Yahoos, als Nutztiere. Gulliver sieht lediglich reinlicher als diese aus. Er gewinnt jedoch das Vertrauen des Anführers der Pferde.

Als Gulliver wieder in England weilt, bittet ihn ein Besucher, mit ihm an Bord seines Schiffes zu reisen. Gulliver ist einverstanden. Doch das Schiff wird von Piraten überfallen. Ein christlicher holländischer Pirat will Gulliver ins Meer werfen lassen, doch der japanische Hauptmann sorgt dafür, dass er am Leben bleibt. Gulliver sagt, dass er mehr Gnade bei einem Heiden, als bei einem Mit-Christen fand. Gulliver wird in einem Boot mit Proviant ausgesetzt. Er kommt an einigen Inseln vorbei und geht schließlich bei einer an Land. Da bemerkt er, dass die Sonne seltsam verdunkelt ist.
