Each year Christendom College hosts a special guest speaker at Commencement to address the graduating class.

James Smith (1802-1862) was a predecessor of Charles Spurgeon at New Park Street Chapel in London from 1841 until 1850. It is said that Smith's readings were even more popular than Spurgeon's. In this sermon, he explains to the believer that they have a relation to have a relation to God and a relation to man, and that they are commanded to do good unto all men, especially unto those who are of the household of faith.

The Divinity School Address was delivered by Emerson to the graduating class of Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 15, 1838. At the time, the Harvard community was strongly Unitarian, and Emerson's argument for a more transcendental view of God and faith was seen as radical, and touched off a great controversy.
