Nineteen-year-old Hedy can't bear her country's neutrality in the face of the ultimate evil. This is not the Switzerland she loves, and she realises she cannot stand by without acting any longer. She joins a group smuggling Jewish children through the forest from France to refugee camps in Geneva. It's dangerous work—there are German patrols everywhere—but finally Hedy feels she is doing something worthwhile.

Jerusalem, 1947: Judith, a young Jewish woman who survived Dachau concentration camp, arrives in Palestine after a treacherous journey and seeks refuge with her only remaining relative, her uncle. When Judith learns her uncle has died, she tries to take her own life in despair. In Hadassah Hospital, Hana, an Arab nurse, saves Judith’s life by donating her own blood. A fragile bond of friendship develops between the two women, but it will face a harsh test over time.

Rev. Johnny Fletcher serves wounded soldiers from the battlefield as a military chaplain during World War II. His forte is spiritual solace in the darkest of times, but his life changes when he performs a public heroic act: facing down an angry mob intent on attacking five young Holocaust survivors. Upon learning they have no homes or families to return to, Fletcher decides to bring them to America.
