Anche il re Luigi XIII è morto, lasciando Luigi XIV, il Re Sole, ancora bambino, sotto la reggenza della madre Anna d'Austria. A Parigi, inoltre, dopo l'ennesimo aumento delle tasse da parte di Mazzarin scoppia la Fronda, che porta scompiglio nella città e preoccupa il cardinale.
