When a 71-year-old man is shot dead in his home, it seems like a random act of violence. But the hundreds of photos of Detective Tori Hunter found at the scene seem to say otherwise. And when the gun that proves to be the murder weapon in the brutal murder of Tori’s family some 30-something years earlier is found, Tori is not only facing her past, but a massive conflict of interest.

Still battling each other and the blue wall, NYPD detectives Chiara Corelli and P. J. Parker catch a new murder case. The victim, a gay man, is posed with a rosary in his hands, the smell of incense in the air, and Gregorian chants playing in the background. While Corelli and Parker search for leads, Kate Burke, the lesbian speaker of the city council, asks for an update on the investigation. Thinking Burke is playing politics, Corelli ignores the request. In the meantime, two more bodies are found, both laid out in the same way.

Rien de plus frustrant pour un policier qu'un cold case : une enquête qui, par manque de preuves, reste non résolue. Malgré toute son expérience, Maud Graham a toujours de la difficulté à accepter que ces cas inexpliqués fassent partie du métier. Surtout que, dans une ville paisible comme Québec, les actes criminels ne sont pas légion. Néanmoins, de nouveaux indices viennent remettre à l'avant-plan un meurtre et une disparition survenus des années plus tôt et pour lesquels ni coupables ni motivations n'avaient été trouvés.
