福島県西部、奥会津・金山町に、只見川から山一つ隔てて、沼沢湖というカルデラ湖が存在する。その湖畔に鎮座する沼御前神社は、浜姫命という、他に見られない神を祭神としている。伝説によれば、浜姫命、通称沼御前は、沼沢湖に住む雌の大蛇で、時折人に危害を加えていた。そこで、鎌倉時代初期、会津若松・黒川城（鶴ヶ城の前身）城主、佐原十郎義連（さわらじゅうろうよしつら）が、家臣を引き連れ、退治する。その首は湖畔に埋め、その霊を弔うために、沼御前神社を立てたという。以後、大蛇の霊は美女に姿を変え、湖底で機を織っていると伝わり、機織りの女神として、明治大正期には、機織りに従事する女性に熱心に信仰された。また、沼御前を退治した佐原十郎義連は、相模の豪族・三浦氏の一族で、源頼朝の挙兵に加わり、平家追討の一ノ谷の戦いでは、義経が率いた「鵯越の逆落とし」で真っ先に崖を駆け下りる武勇を見せたと「平家物語」は伝える。奥州藤原氏征伐の奥州合戦でも武功を上げ、会津に領地を与えられ、戦国時代、伊達政宗に滅ぼされるまで数百年に渡り会津を支配した、蘆名氏の始祖となる。会津に武家時代の夜明けを告げる神話的「ドラゴン退治」の伝説を読み解く。
