On a serene night in 1953, Sally Mason, a dedicated wife and mother of two, drives a twisting road on her way home from night school. Suddenly, a mysterious bluish-white light descends over the road. Terrified, Sally slams on the brakes. After a flash of bright light nearly blinds her, she passes out, awakening to the persistent knock of a police officer on her car window. When she sees the officer and remembers her frightening experience, she screams and faints, and is rushed to the hospital.

More and more space arks are landing on Lumera. The humans' new home is breathtakingly beautiful, but dangerous plants and bestial predators punish every careless step. Sophisticated aliens keep themselves hidden, and they may be superior to humans. The human colony is beset by internal conflict. A civil war threatens.

The Earth is dying. For centuries, the continents have been sinking into the oceans. What is left of them has turned into a burning desert. In the 24th century, the last humans live in tightly-packed domes. Outside, agonizing heat death awaits. But, there is a glimmer of hope: Lumera. The humans have founded a colony in another solar system and made a fragile peace with the Kidj'Dan, an alien race living there. But terraforming, which the telepathic aliens hope will help Earth's inhabitants, takes more time than Earth has.
