Author Paul Eve Stevenson tells the tale of his journey around Cape Horn from New York to San Francisco in the mid-19th century aboard a tall masted sailing ship. Experience the harshness of a voyage filled with adventure and danger. A thrilling sequel to his A Deep-Water Voyage adventure from New York, around the Cape of Good Hope to Calcutta. "As in the case of our first “Deep-Water Voyage” to Calcutta, the present one was undertaken with the sole idea of enjoyment. The pleasure which such a voyage affords the fortunate few in whom there is a real affection for the sea is quite ...

Story0
Mina Benson Hubbard set out in 1905 on a 576 mile canoe journey across the interior of Labrador with the assistance of four guides. Her husband Leonidas Hubbard had perished in an attempt to make the same trip in 1903 while working as a writer for an outdoor magazine. Mrs Hubbard was the first person to accurately map the river routes her expedition followed. The story of her journey is followed at the end of the book by her husband's diary of his ill-fated trip and an account by George Elson of his efforts to save himself and his companions, and ultimately to recover Mr Hubbard's body. A map ...

Story0
Every age witnesses the birth of some great soul. Sometimes events bring these people to the attention of the world. More often than not, they alter the lives around them, then pass on quietly. Such a soul belonged to the author of this cherished book. There was nothing in Louisa Jebb's comfortable Victorian youth to indicate she would one day take to the saddle and pen one of the most eloquent equestrian travel books ever written. Yet in the early years of the 20th century, Jebb set out with a female companion to cross the Turkish Empire on horseback. To say they were unprepared to become ...

Story0
In this fifth and (as far as is known) final volume of Peggy Raymond and her Friendly Terrace entourage, we find the Girls winding down from the Great War, and pursuing more domestic and mischievous pursuits. Finishing up college and preparing for Peggy and Grahame's wedding, Ruth, Amy and Priscilla look toward their own opportunities of future relationships and potential marriages. As Harriet Lummis Smith is so good at, it is a neat blend of continuity toward the known characters and charming introductions of the new. (Summary by Daryl Wor)

Story0
"Swann's Way" is the first of the seven parts of Marcel Proust's great autobiographical novel "In Search of Lost Time." From the very first page the reader is drawn into the many facets of memory, memory as prompted by all the human senses. "Swann's Way (Du côté de chez Swann, sometimes translated as The Way by Swann's) (1913) was rejected by a number of publishers, including Fasquelle, Ollendorff, and the Nouvelle Revue Française (NRF). André Gide was famously given the manuscript to read to advise NRF on publication, and leafing through the seemingly endless collection of memories and ...

Dr. Deane's Way, and Other Stories

Story0
Short stories for the young and young-at-heart. Included are a family with an overly-strict father and free-spirited daughter; a series of "just happened" circumstances (orchestrated by God, of course); a reminiscence of two poor medical students; a moral dilemma placed before a minister; and a few short pieces about various children, each with its moral lesson. (Summary by TriciaG)Note that "Dr. Deane's Way" ends abruptly, with the feeling that it's an incomplete story. There are, in fact, only the four chapters.
