Story0
We have all grown up listening to stories from our grandparents, parents or a relative who always had the best of stories to tell. These stories were either legends or folk tales from around the world or famous stories that have travelled the world over time and space. But there are a separate set of stories which smells of our roots, tells us of a time gone by or teach us few lessons that still stands true. Bengali folktales. Bengal, not just West Bengal but beyond the borders of India the country of Bangladesh, which was undivided once, has a treasure trove of such tales. History, legends, ...

Folk-Lore and Legends: Scandinavian

Story0
Thanks to Thiele, to Hylten-Cavallius and Stephens, and to Asbjörnsen and Moe, Scandinavian Folklore is well to the front. Its treasures are many, and of much value. One may be almost sorry to find among them the originals of many of our English tales. Are we indebted to the folk of other nations for all our folk-tales? It would almost seem so. I have introduced into the present volume only one or two stories from the Prose Edda. Space would not allow me to give so much of the Edda as I could have wished. In selecting and translating the matter for this volume, I have endeavoured to make the ...

Algonquin Legends of New England or Myths and Folk Lore of the Micmac

This work, then, contains a collection of the myths, legends, and folk-lore of the principal Wabanaki, or Northeastern Algonquin, Indians; that is to say, of the Passamaquoddies and Penobscots of Maine, and of the Micmacs of New Brunswick. All of this material was gathered directly from Indian narrators, the greater part by myself, the rest by a few friends; in fact, I can give the name of the aboriginal authority for every tale except one. (Summary by Charles Godfrey Leland)

Folk-lore and Legends: Russian and Polish

Story0
In this volume I present selections made from the Russian chap-book literature, and from the works of various Russian and Polish collectors of Folklore—Afanasief, Erben, Wojcicki, Glinski, etc. The chap-book tales, and many of those of Glinski, are, there is little doubt, of foreign origin, but since Russia and Poland are the countries in which these tales have found their home, and since they have there been so adapted by the people as to incorporate the national customs and lore, they appear to me to belong properly to the present volume. - Summary by Charles John Tibbets

Story0
What happens when a forgotten book of legends finds its way off the shelf and back into the world? Folk Tales Then and Now brings some much-needed escapism into everyday life — inspired by a little blue book of Folk Tales in the East Midlands, published in 1954 and rediscovered in a charming second-hand bookshop in the Peak District. Each week, a story from the book is retold and re-explored: the places behind the pages are visited, the folklore and legends of the East Midlands unpacked, and the voices of the landscape brought to life once more. From haunted halls and ancient greenwoods to ...

Of the first section, assistant editor Daniel Edwin Wheeler says, "After our boys and girls have read the first half of this volume, containing selected and simplified stories from some of the greatest books of all time, their authors will cease to be merely names. Homer, Shakespeare, Chaucer, Cervantes and Bunyan will be found here as familiar and easy in style as "Cinderella" or "The Three Bears." The second section's ...

Leave the highway behind for the dark back roads of the American South. Since 1997, The Moonlit Road has been gathering the Southern ghost stories, folklore, and oral traditions whispered across generations — from the bayous of Louisiana to the Sea Islands of Georgia to the hollows of Appalachia. In each episode, gifted storytellers, musicians, and folklorists bring you haunted history, forgotten legends, and the creatures that still stalk the Southern imagination: the Bell Witch, the Boo Hag, the Loup Garou. This is the South that lives past the porch light — in the deep roots of Voodoo ...

Fireside Folktales was created by Dallas Hawthorn as a way to celebrate and create artwork. Whether a show takes one year or five years, the end result and the passion involved in the project is all that matters to him. Season One, Whispering, is a retelling of the myth of Hades and Persephone, as told through the perspective of the soon-to-be Queen of the Dead. Season Two is a performance of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream; an experience filled to the brim with music, mischief, magic, and stereo sound design.
