During the long, hot summer of 1900, young Leo Colston is invited to stay for a month at a lordly, aristocratic manor in Norfolk. There he falls in love with his friend's older sister, who commissions him to ferry secret messages to the local farmer, her lover. His naiveté sustains their affair until ultimately leading to an event that will change their lives irrevocably.

Emily runs a successful bistro in Humboldt County, California, where she lives with her boyfriend, Jeff, a volunteer firefighter. A lot of her best customers are in the cannabis business, but so what? It's true, firefighting isn't really Jeff's main job - that would be flying Humboldt's finest weed to out-of-state customers. And sure, he isn't really Emily's boyfriend, more like the guy she's stuck with by circumstance. Actually, his name is Danny, not Jeff, and Emily's real name is Michelle Mason, although no one can ever know that.

A new adaptation of L. P. Hartley's story of a boy who is betrayed by a sophisticated young rich woman and her farmer lover who use him to ferry letters back and forth in the blazing summer of 1900 - with Richard Griffiths and Harriet Walter. It's best known from the 1970 film, which focused on the main plot line. But on re-reading the book, adaptor Frances Byrnes found within it another drama perfect for audio in which an old man finds a boyhood diary and is forced to unlock the trauma inside.

The search for Arnie Walker was not a job that Sam Grant was particularly keen to undertake. But Miss Gloriana Goldstar was so pressing in her demand that he should do so that it became impossible to refuse. A trip to Amsterdam seemed a pleasant enough prospect but when there are people there intent on bringing your life to an abrupt end, the experience becomes rather less than enjoyable. All he was doing was trying to find Mr Walker and urge him to return to Miss Goldstar's loving arms.
