Published between 1833 and 1841, the 90 Tracts were written by various members of "The Oxford Movement". They cover various aspects of Anglo-Catholic doctrine and other theological matters. The lead was taken by John Henry Newman (who made the largest contribution), but several other churchmen associated with Oxford University were also involved, among them John Keble, Hurrell Froude, and Edward Pusey. Among the newly written tracts were also re-prints of works from previous generations. The Tracts are of various lengths, ranging from a few pages to book-length works. The format and cheap ...

This New Testament was translated from the Greek by a Christian Universalist evangelist who later fell out of the faith. “A Treatise on Images will not be out of place in a public which is confusing the making of images with the making of idols. A great Christian of the eighth century found himself called upon to face an imperial Iconoclast, Leo the Isaurian, who waged war against holy images, on the plausible pretext that they withdrew honour from God. He would willingly have remained silent, but he would not bury his talent of eloquence. He brought it forth and witnessed to the teaching of the Church... The seventh General Council condemned Leo’s assault. And the special champion of holy Images is St John ...

Story0
The story of Jesus Christ is a treasure of Western civilization. Understanding that life and story is necessary for a proper understanding of that cultural history. This recording draws from several sources, certainly not comprehensive but nonetheless indicative. It begins with readings from the biblical New Testament Gospels about the last hours of Jesus’ life, using The American Standard Version (1901), which is based on The Authorized Version commonly called The King James Version, supplemented and advantaged by four hundred more years of biblical scholarship. Each Gospel has its own ...

This book is no other than a perfect map of man and anatomy of all ages; A "nosce te ipsum", which is the highest pitch and hardest lesson of all human learning; An universal dial which (though made in France) yet serves (without any astronomical reduction) for all meridians, and shows how the minutes of man's life pass away from the first rising to the last setting thereof, and even from Solomon upon his golden throne, to Job scraping himself with potsherds upon the ash-heap; for what man is he that shall not see death? (as David said it, and saw it) and after that comes judgment to heaven or...

The Fundamentals: A Testimony To The Truth (generally referred to simply as The Fundamentals) is a set of ninety essays published between 1910 and 1915 by the Testimony Publishing Company of Chicago. According to its foreword, the publication was designed to be "a new statement of the fundamentals of Christianity." However, its contents reflect a concern with certain theological innovations related to liberal Christianity, especially biblical higher criticism. It is widely considered to be the foundation of modern Christian fundamentalism. The essays were written by sixty-four different ...

Story0
The Summa Theologica (or the Summa Theologiae or simply the Summa, written 1265–1274) is the most famous work of Thomas Aquinas (c. 1225–1274) although it was never finished. It was intended as a manual for beginners and a compilation of all of the main theological teachings of that time. It summarizes the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West, which, before the Protestant Reformation, subsisted solely in the Roman Catholic Church. The Summa's topics follow a cycle: the existence of God, God's creation, Man, Man's purpose, Christ, the Sacraments, and back to God...

Story0
A DOUBTER'S Doubts about Science and Religion was first published anonymously, at a time when the author was Assistant Commissioner of Police and Head of the Criminal Investigation Department, at Scotland Yard (London). As the book is addressed to men of the world, it speaks from the standpoint of scepticism — the true scepticism which tests everything, not the sham sort which credulously accepts anything that seems to discredit the Bible. If, for example, the Bible taught evolution, it may be averred that evolution would be scoffed by many who now cling to it with a childlike faith worthy ...
