Frederick Palmer was already an experienced war correspondent when World War I began in 1914, as he had previously covered six wars, beginning with the Greco-Turkish War of 1897. "With the New Army on the Somme" was his second book about World War I. The story shifts between his first-person accounts from the trenches and Brigade Headquarters to narrations of distant campaigns, the role of the air war, strategic thinking by the Generals, and the coordination of the allies. The Peloponnesian War broke out in 431 B.C. and continued intermittently for 27 years. It pitted the all-powerful land force of Sparta and its allies against the supremely powerful naval force of Athens. Thucydides actually participated in this conflict, a war that he realized would have a greater influence on the history of Greece than any other. He vividly narrates exciting episodes and carefully describes tactical aspects of the war, and also provides illuminating character profiles.

One essay (1909) lays out tactics for mountain fighting, focused on British Army experience on the Indian frontier (Afghanistan), penned by a British officer who fought in that conflict, Wilkinson Dent Bird. Written a year after the events, this is an eyewitness account of the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862. Early in the American Civil War, in April 1862, Union volunteers led by a civilian, James J. Andrews, conducted a military mission to damage as much of the Western and Atlantic Railroad as possible. The aim was to sabotage the Confederate army. The Union raiders commandeered a train, The General, in Big Shanty, Georgia. Confederate forces quickly gave chase, both on foot and by locomotive.
