When Dash and Leira repair a powerful scanner, it finds something unusual in a distant system—the remains of an ancient battlefield. Custodian tells of a fight lost long ago, leaving drifting debris around the faraway star. But the battlefield isn't forgotten. A human colony has taken hold nearby, and on their world, a single, massive ship has crashed.

Terror has fallen like a dark shroud on the Cygnus Realm. Darius Spann has returned with his mech, the Pulsar, dramatically empowered by the terrifying technology of the enigmatic alien Khitsos. Declaring the Cygnus Realm dissolved, the Cygnus Empire restored, and himself as its Autarch and the Champion of all of humankind, Spann is determined to lead humanity to what he sees as its great destiny among the stars.

The cold war smoldering between the Realm and the Empire drags on. Both sides now turn to the distant spinward stars for a way to break the deadlock. Cryptic signals from deep space hint at powerful civilizations, and potential allies to turn the tide in favor of one side or the other, propelling it to victory. But who—or what—are these mysterious powers?

When he was twenty, Conover joined Dash Sawyer, the man who would be the original Messenger, in fighting for humanity's future against an implacable alien foe. Two brutal wars later, Conover had proven himself a skilled mech pilot, flying the mighty Pulsar and helping win ultimate victory for Dash's newly-formed Cygnus Realm. Nearly a century-and-a-half later, an aging Conover now bears the mantle of Messenger, leading the Cygnus Realm through a long age of peace and prosperity.

As the Realm grows around a Kingsport that is now more massive than any human creation, Dash will find common cause with a race who lurk in the shadows, well beyond the edge of known human space. With ships of a new design, the Realm will turn outward, striking into territory long held by the Deepers and their unholy creatures, wrapped in technology as old as the stars themselves. But the universe is shrinking, thanks to Realm scientists and the efforts of Kai and his brethren, who find that secrets still remain in the hidden places where humans store memory and history - and weapons.

Fighting over a span of light years that boggles the mind, Dash and his crew are drawn farther out in the big black than any human has ever gone...or so they thought. A small beacon of humanity drifts, alone, frozen, and ancient, out where the light of days is older than the history of mankind.

With the Archetype damaged, Dash and his crew will need more than a quick fix to prepare for what's coming. A secret facility known only as the Forge lies in cold sleep, built by the Unseen for the greatest war in history. Dash has no idea what awaits him there, but he hopes to find some kind of advantage in the war that is to come. Meanwhile, on a distant world, an ancient order of monks protects a long-buried secret.

With the Realm advancing, Dash and his allies are faced with the full might of an enemy designed for one thing: to end all life. As the ships of the Realm push through the Cradle, the Golden defenses grow tougher, revealing entire fleets of ships, Harbingers, and new, more lethal weapons arranged in an impenetrable field of fire. From mechs to carriers, Dash and his allies must save those who have been enslaved by Golden technology, all while bringing about a final cataclysm.

The Verity are in collapse. Clan Shirna is gone. And all along, the ships of the Cygnus Realm have been pushing back until only the Golden are left. Or so Dash thought. With the discovery of two new races and a sphere of stars embroiled in war, Dash hurls the Forge ever deeper into territory where no human can live free. The Golden are no longer merely advisors - now, they are present in the fights themselves, their silver ships gleaming with menace in a war that threatens to incinerate an entire arm of the galaxy.

The Ravennox are still out there. But thanks to Darius Spann and the Superba, Lawson and the other forces of the newly-restored Cygnus Realm face another, far more immediate threat. Spann and his Superba allies still hold sway over a huge swath of human territory, declaring it all Imperial space. Humanity is split, the Realm on one side and the Empire on the other, both claiming to be led by the Messenger. With neither able to land a decisive blow to knock out the other, a cold war now simmers between these two competing visions for the future.

As Dash and his team begin expanding the Forge, they must focus on Dark Metal as the one thing that can give them an advantage in the coming war. Using drones and a map from an ancient library, Dash and Leira must seek out the source of a transmission coming from far away. That source, however, is something far more valuable than they could have hoped: a fleet of ancient Unseen ships, waiting to be salvaged.
