When Aesca Lampi wakes up in the form of her character from Eldest Fantasy Wars Online, she's annoyed by the historical inaccuracies. (Video-game-style scrolls? Really?) That is, until a building collapses on top of her, revealing she's on a fantastical island centered around the impossibly tall, glowing Tower of Aetherius . . . with an array of dangerous creatures—including jaguar hybrids, velociraptors, and giant, flesh-eating lizards—in the way. (Oh, joy.)

Along with her self-assured dragon-cat Arkaziel and the ghostly elf Werylin, aqua-haired Aetheria has reached the fiftieth floor of the Tower of Aetherius. But she's a little different than when she set out. For one thing, she's a third-tier magic user. For another, her soul has been connected to the Origin, the source of Ethereal power, which is bombarding her with all kinds of emotions. Not to mention she's having a little trouble desiring anyone but her soul-witch lover, Aoibhe.

Now that the Tower of Aetherius has been cleared, Aetheria, daughter of Aetherius and Nyx, has another tower to climb: the Tower of Moros, god of doom. Luckily, the Challenger of Aetherius is more powerful than ever, armed with her Astrum Nexus gloves, forged by Vulcan himself, and all the treasures of the legendary city of Nova Azura, which currently burns inside her...among other things. And, oh yeah, that means some voices in her head. (Don't worry about it).

Aliisza betrayed her lover, her mentor, and her son in order to try to stop the dark plot to kill the goddess Mystra. She failed. Now the goddess is dead, magic is malfunctioning, and Aliisza and her companions are trapped. Her only hope of escape lies is in convincing the angels and demons she just betrayed to trust her and work together - before they kill each other. Darkken shares his plans for Nalzambor's future, convincing Nath, that the world is not meant for dragons, and that they are the true evolution of the new order. Nath has his doubts, but helps see his brothers plot through. Slivver, Elween, and Brenwar align all of the forces they can muster to track Nath down, before Darkken leads them all to a perilous end. Who can Nath trust? Darkken, his brother, or his friends? Can he make the right decision for himself?

Betrayed by the Black Hand yet again, Nath finds himself in a battle for his life with ruthless enemies attacking from all sides. Who can he trust? Meanwhile, as his bonds grow stronger with Calypsa the half-dryad, and Hacksaw the old knight, Lord Darkken begins to take command and leading Nath on a perilous journey with the dubious dark elven brothers of the wind.

Led by a mysterious diabolical menace, cunning dark elves hatch a deadly scheme that will destroy Nath Dragon and his kin. Forced to run or die, Nath is thrust from the sanctuary of Dragon Home and into the wild. With nobody to trust and nowhere to go, the young warrior sets out to uncover answers that his rivals will kill to protect.

Nath, Darkken, and Maefon's relationships grow stronger and they become quite the formidable band of heroes. Still taken in by the deception, Nath journeys with his new companions across Nalzambor to the town of Old Hen. It is there that they begin a desperate search in a bizarre gargantuan crypt guarded by the undead. Within, they hope to find the secret of Dragon Steel, that can be turned into a weapon, that can kill anything.
