It's the early 2010s, and 17-year-old Yesenia Rivera hates everything about herself: her brown skin and wide nose, her curly hair and hand-me-down clothing, and her inability to fit in with either the Mexican girls or the white girls at her school. So when her mother's new job requires them to uproot their lives and move to the Pacific Northwest, Yesenia devises a plan to remake herself completely.

Cassie and her friends get to do exactly that—until they find their lives spiraling into a web of secrets, deception, and danger. Past suspicions are renewed, blurring the truth, and they are left struggling to protect one another from the outside world that threatens to take away their new-found freedom.

Thirteen-year-old Stacy is sunbathing in the backyard when she hears a strange noise from inside the house. Turning to look, she sees a man with a gun burst through the door; then everything goes black. She wakes up in a hospital bed to learn that she has spent the last four years in a catatonic state. Suddenly 17, she finds herself struggling to adjust and fighting to remember what happened to her. She is the only witness to the shooting that injured her and killed her mother.
