Julius Robert Oppenheimer (April 22, 1904-February 18, 1967) was an American theoretical physicist and director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II. Jonas Edward Salk (October 28, 1914-June 23, 1995), born in New York City, was an American virologist and medical researcher. A graduate of City College of New York and New York University School of Medicine, in 1947, Salk accepted a professorship at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he undertook a project to determine the number of different types of poliovirus and, eventually, develop a vaccine against polio. Sir Alexander Fleming (August 6, 1881 - March 11, 1955) was a Scottish biologist, pharmacologist and botanist. He wrote many articles on bacteriology, immunology, and chemotherapy. His best-known discoveries are the enzyme substance lysozyme in 1923, and the anitbiotic substance penicillin from the mould Penicillium notatum in 1928, for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 with Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain. Watson (January 18, 1854 - December 13, 1934) was a bookkeeper and a carpenter before he found a job more to his liking in the Charles Williams machine shop in Boston. He was then hired by Alexander Graham Bell, who was a professor at Boston University. They were known for the invention of the telephone.
