Bertrand Russell (May 18, 1872 - February 2, 1970) was born in Monmouthshire into one of the most prominent anti-war aristocractic families in Britain. Russell was a philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, prominent anti-war activist, and an outspoken opponent of nuclear weapons. In 1950, Russell was awarded the Nobel prize in Literature. The following is a 1959 speech on nuclear disarmament.

Herbert Louis Samuel was a British politician who was the Liberal Party leader from 1931 to 1935. He was the first practicing Jew to serve as a Cabinet minister and to become the leader of a major British political party. In January 1915, Samuel circulated a memorandum, "The Future of Palestine", to his cabinet colleagues, suggesting that Britain should conquer Palestine in order to protect the Suez Canal against foreign powers and for Palestine to become a home for the Jewish people.
