Fem tonårsflickor i den lilla staden Stenträsk i Norrbotten träffas en gång i månaden för att diskutera litteratur. En av dem försvinner spårlöst sommaren 1980. Fyrtio år senare hittas hon, mördad. Julen 2020 återförenas de fyra kvinnorna i bokcirkeln, som de kallade för Polcirkeln, för första gången efter kamratens försvinnande. Det står snart klart att något i flickornas relationer utlöste det våldsamma brottet. Frågan är vad, och vad som drev dem då och vilka konsekvenser det fick.
