Der Sandmann ist eine 1816 erstmals veröffentlichte Erzählung des romantischen Autors E. T. A. Hoffmann. Es ist vor allem eine finstere Erzählung über die Abgründe der menschlichen Psyche. Der Student Nathanael erzählt seinem Freund Lothar in einem Brief, er habe in der Gestalt des Wetterglashändlers Coppola den Advokaten Coppelius wiedergetroffen. Dieser hatte während Nathanaels Kindheit mit dessen Vater alchemistische Experimente durchgeführt, die letztlich zum Tod des Vaters führten.
