Village and The Library

Story0
The Village is Crabbe’s corrective to the rosy-tinted view of English village and rural working class life. He was a stark realist, as a priest and surgeon having been privy to so much of actual, rather than ideal, life. The Library is his appreciation of the value of books and literature. George Crabbe (1754 – 1832) was an English poet, surgeon, and clergyman. He is best known for his early use of the realistic narrative form and his descriptions of middle and working-class life and people. Lord Byron described him as "nature's sternest painter, yet the best." Crabbe's poetry was ...

If you love the quiet of the country - the real quiet which is not silence at all, but the blending of a myriad scarce-perceptible sounds you will get it in Windlecombe, year in and year out. For how many ages a human settlement has existed in this wooded, sun-flooded cleft of the Downs, it is impossible to hazard a guess. Windlecombe is mentioned in Domesday, but the stones of the old church proclaim it as belonging to times more distant still. Neighbourhood, the daily interchange of thought and word and kindly deed, is a necessity for all healthy human life, and the natural medium of all ...

This book is a compilation of short stories originally published in several series in The Lady's Magazine. Volume 1 covers a period of about 18 months, then later, Volume 2 chronicles the changes when Miss Mitford returns to the village some 2 years later. The book's subtitle is “sketches of rural character and scenery”... and this perfectly describes its contents. People and nature are minutely observed and the language reflects Miss Mitford's exquisite eye for detail and love of the changing seasons and the impact they have on the flora and fauna around her. The village characters are ...

Story0
Tickner Edwardes (properly Edward Tickner Edwardes) served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during WWI and later became the vicar of the West Sussex village of Burpham. Edwardes has the same naturalist's fascination with the world around him as Gilbert White had, a century before. He wrote on beekeeping, wrote what is probably the earliest book describing hitchhiking, and wrote a number of books (fiction and non-fiction) about life on the Sussex Downs. "Neighbourhood" is a semi-fictionalised essay on life in his village, and on its people, month by month through the year.
