Der Wissenschaftler Ernest Whyte erhält ein anonymes Schreiben: Eine große Geldsumme wird ihm angeboten, wenn er nach Dreamtown reist, um einen gewissen G. S. zu treffen. Dreamtown ist eine unbekannte Stadt irgendwo mitten in der Wüste. Whyte beschließt, die Reise trotz der Ungewissheit zu wagen. In der gottverlassenen Stadt angekommen, wird er Augenzeuge merkwürdiger Ereignisse: Zum einen stellt er fest, dass es in Dreamtown keine Kinder gibt. Weshalb? Und weshalb müssen die schwangeren Frauen am Rande der Stadt in einem Haus ohne Fenster ausharren und können nicht gebären?

Alfred Larribee is sent by his father to live with his cousin’s family in the West. Larribee proves to be lazy and shiftless…spending most of his time in town…drinking and gambling…even cheating at cards. What changes all this is the appearance of Sky Blue…a magnificent stallion that has never been ridden. Dan Gurry is the owner and hopes to find a cowboy who can ride Sky Blue…but the first one to try is seriously injured. After that no one is willing to volunteer to try again except Larribee.

Sunrise, despite its name, is a wicked town. It is the only wide open town in the Crazy Butte country. It attracts gamblers, above all Dan Farlin, who works in the Red Arrow, the most prosperous saloon in Sunrise, owned by Big Tom Lester, who runs the town if anyone does.
