Jack Kerouac but make it a girl with braids. Carrie Bradshaw, but without the sex, and also braids. An American Icon. An American Odyssey. American propaganda. Violently so, in some cases. Laura Ingalls Wilder is evergreen. For better or worse. Since the first Little House book was published in 1932, generations of readers have flocked to Laura’s cozy stories of the Ingalls family settling the Western frontier. The series inspired a TV show, pageants, and entire fashion lines. Behind this franchise is a woman who experienced almost a full century of American history. She’d made her first ...

Story0
Hector Langdon volunteered for service in the army in World War I when he was no more than 17 years old, though he gave his age as 20. It was the kind of reckless action he was to take all his life, much to the regret of his solicitor father who wished him to follow in the same profession. So he drifted from one occupation to another after the war, never really settling down. It seemed he had to be forever on the move. Until he met Eva Gray, and even that meeting was to lead in the end to tragedy.

Trial of Oscar Wilde (Dramatic Reading)

Story0
In 1895 Oscar Wilde was convicted of gross indecency and sentenced to two years' hard labor. This account of his two trials was compiled from the original shorthand court reports by an anonymous author. While a more complete account of the trial was published several years later, it omitted the more 'sensational' exchanges. This shorter version was clearly intended for a more prurient reader. In it we hear Wilde's famous defence of "the love that dare not speak its name", and see the evidence mount as a succession of attractive young men step into the witness box to tell their tales. - Summary...

On the night of August 17, 1959, at 1137 PM, a powerful earthquake struck the picturesque vacation destination of West Yellowstone, Montana, leaving devastation in its wake. A mountainside crumbled, a lake emerged, and roads and homes vanished. Lives were forever altered as people found themselves trapped, some tragically losing their lives. The author, captivated by the aftermath, journeyed to the area just a day after the quake, gathering harrowing first-hand accounts and meticulously researching the event over the following months. Within a year, he crafted this poignant narrative, enriched...

Henry Shakespear’s book contains gripping accounts of hunting wild animals in India in the mid-19th century, along with supplementary commentary on the breeding and rearing of horses. At that time, the wild beasts of India posed a real threat to villagers as is evident from an 1855/56 report from one district which records 150 deaths caused by bears and tigers. Shakespear provides detailed descriptions based on his personal encounters in chapters like Hog-Hunting, The Man-Eater, Tiger-Shooting, The Panther, The Bear, Bears and Buffalos, Wild Elephants, and The Buffalo and the Bison.

Journey through the rich history and vibrant customs of Ireland and its people with Wild Irishman. This podcast features the unapologetically critical perspective of Englishman Thomas Crosland, whose views reflect the prejudices of his time in the late 1800s.
