Eight years ago, the world as we know it ended. Now, the last US government stronghold has sent a military recon team from Camp David to the bombed-out city of Seattle, but the mission turns deadly when a horde of horrifying mutant creatures are released onto the streets. Oliver Marcus and Trisha Pike, the only survivors of their nine-man team, are rescued by a group of scavengers led by their superhuman leader, River Kingston. Driven by the need to find her lost husband, River is drawn in by Mycroft, the invisible puppet master behind New Texas.

After surviving an ambush and a firefight on a glacier, Danny and the other mech operators discover that the aliens have sent out a distress signal, seeking extraterrestrial reinforcements. Realizing that they need to prepare for another potential attack, the operators take refuge in a military base where they learn that the Mech Command plans to conduct operations in space in the near future. Armed with this intel, the operators return to Washington, DC where Danny begins to gather evidence about the activities of the head of the Mech Command, Jonas Vidmark.

They had a doorway into the past. But it didn't just open on a specific place on a certain day. There was a sort of flutter, and it caused spatial drift and temporal spread. Two probes might go through together on the 21st-century side but come out miles and years apart on the Silurian side. So, when the second of two people going through a portal into the past is lost, the first feels an abstract guilt that eats into her pleasure at having traveled through time.
