In The Damned Thing, Ambrose Bierce presents a chilling tale of the unknown and unseen. Author Ambrose Bierce (June 24, 1842-c. 1914) was a prolific and versatile writer regarded as one of the most influential journalists in the United States and as a pioneering writer of realist fiction. His horror writing is ranked alongside Edgar Allan Poe and H. P. Lovecraft. He may well be the greatest satirist America has ever produced.

In "The Dunwich Horror" (1928), Wilbur Whateley, the son of a deformed albino mother and an unknown father, matures at an abnormal rate, reaching manhood within a decade. All the while, his sorcerer grandfather indoctrinates him into certain dark rituals and the study of witchcraft. "The Thing at the Doorstep" was written five years later.
