Niels Aage Barfoeds biografiske roman "Spurveskjul" fortæller historien om Thora Esches (1850-1920) spændende liv og omfattende arbejde som forstanderinde på blandt andet Magdalenehjemmet i København, der tog sig af unge kvinder, der ønskede at komme ud af prostitution. Thora Esche var en del af Indre Mission og ledede hjemmet ud fra kristne værdier. Hendes filantropiske arbejde udvidede sig med tiden til også at omfatte unge mødre, der ikke var i stand til at tage vare på deres børn alene.
