Imagine you can hear a couple fighting - but you can’t see who’s raising their fists. How do you decide who’s in danger - is it the woman…or is it the man? The first full-length drama in 30 years to explore whether men can be victims of domestic abuse, “Tulips” is inspired by many true stories – including two celebrity court cases (those of Johnny Depp and Caroline Flack). This is a professionally-recorded full-cast adaptation of the stage play that was toured across the South East of England in 2019.

The Black Tulip, written by Alexandre Dumas père and published in 1850, is a historical novel placed in the time of Tulipmania in the Netherlands. The novel begins with the 1672 politically motivated mob lynching of the de Witt brothers and then follows the story of Cornelius van Baerle, godson of Cornelius de Wit. Cornelius Van Baerle has joined the race to breed a truly black tulip – and to win the prize of 100,000 guilders, as well as fame and honour. As he nears his goal he is jailed and then of course rescued – by the beautiful Rosa, daughter of the jailer.

This is a podcast all about tulips! For an art project I paint 99 tulips who played a role in an extraordinary event in 17th century Holland; the tulip mania. For this project I do a lot of research. And as I learn, I want to share the stories with you. I dive into the history of the tulip and talk of events from long ago, and I tell present day tulip stories. I talk about the role of the tulip in Dutch culture and Dutch art. I speak about tulip gardening and about the present day tulip trade in the Netherlands.
