Yet it is also woven through with remarkable invention to make it a rich and complex novel.

ഭാവനയിലൂടെ ചരിത്രത്തെ പുനഃസൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന ഒ.വി. വിജയന്‍ ജാതീയതയെ പുതിയൊരു കാഴ്ചപ്പാടില്‍ സമീപിക്കുന്നു. ജാതികള്‍ക്കിടയിലുള്ള അതിസൂക്ഷ്മമായ വ്യത്യാസങ്ങളെയും വൈരുദ്ധ്യങ്ങളെയും മൂന്നു ഘട്ടത്തിലൂടെ- ബ്രാഹ്മണ്യം നേടാനുള്ള തീവ്രശ്രമം, അതു നേടിയെടുത്തപ്പോള്‍ തോന്നുന്ന നിഷ്പ്രയോജനത, കഠിനയാതനകളിലൂടെ നേടിയെടുത്ത ബ്രാഹ്മണ്യത്തോടുള്ള തികഞ്ഞ അവജ്ഞ- തലമുറകളില്‍ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുകയാണ്.

हेच वि. स. खांडेकर यांनी उदाहरण देऊन पटवून दिले आहे. पहिले प्रेम हे कधीही अंतिम सत्य नसते कधी कधी पुन्हा झालेले प्रेमही पहिल्या प्रेमापेक्षा श्रेष्ठ असू शकते.

Mladý muž Severin von Kusiemski se vášnivě zamiluje do Wandy von Dunajev, která v jeho očích ztělesňuje dokonalou ženu – chladnou krásku třímající v ruce bič. Wanda Severinovo přání stát se jejím otrokem zpočátku nechápe, pak ale zjistí, že výhody této metody jsou zajímavé a trýzní Severina s rostoucí rafinovaností. Společně se propadají stále hlouběji do víru moci, nadvlády a podřízenosti. Hranice mezi jejich sexuálními fantaziemi a realitou přestává existovat.
