I en frys upptäcker man något som får även de mest hårdhudade utredarna inom Oslopolisen att rysa. Oberoende av varandra ger sig tre personer ut på jakten efter sanningen: polisen Michael, vars hund fann barnet, journalisten Kevin, som jagar en bra historia, och den psykiskt sjuka Sara, dotter till en mördare.Samtidigt har Dödsängeln, ökänd för att ha skära änglavingar på sina offers ryggar, äntligen gripits. Alla andas ut. Men en ny kropp dyker snart upp och skräcken sätter klorna i de tre sökande.

I ett hus dekorerat med skräckfilmsaffischer hittas en ung kvinna död. Hon ligger på sängen i sitt sovrum med två blodiga kroppsdelar i handen. Kriminalinspektör Jane Rizzoli och rättsläkaren Maura Isles kallas till mordplatsen, men inte ens när de står inför det lemlästade offret lyckas de komma fram till hur mordet gått till. Gradvis leder utredningen tillbaka till ett annat uppmärksammat fall som synbarligen lösts många år tidigare. Men när ännu ett mordoffer påträffas under makabra omständigheter klarnar länken mellan de mördade.

Peter is an odd duck, obsessed with logic and measurable facts, an obsession he puts to good use in his veterinary practice. When a murder is connected to the swine barn explosion and his friend Tom becomes the prime suspect, Peter feels compelled to put his reasoning skills, and his dog Pippin’s remarkable nose, to use to help clear him. Peter Bannerman, veterinarian and amateur detective, deserves a summer vacation. Peter and his family head to a remote fishing lodge in northern Manitoba for a canoeing trip with his champion sniffer dog, Pippin. But a series of incidents color their plans. The lodge’s sled team of huskies has been poisoned and, at the same time, a floatplane crashes into the lake, killing the pilot and both passengers. Soon after, people around are horrified by a series of animal mutilations. This sets Peter, and his talented sniffer dog, Pippin, on the hunt for answers. Peter begins to suspect a link between the Viking artifact, the mutilations, and a shadowy group of white supremacists.
