Gustavo Adolfo tenía cinco años cuando murió su padre, y a los nueve, falleció su madre. A los diecisiete años viajó a Madrid a buscar fortuna en la literatura. Pasó penalidades, viviendo al día gracias a sus artículos literarios y a sus pinturas. Trabajó en la redacción de "El Contemporáneo" y fue entonces cuando escribió la mayoría de sus leyendas y las "Cartas desde mi celda".
