Premchand’s Karmabhoomi explores the struggle between the characters’ sense of duty and their ambitions and how this causes a wedge between their various personal relationships. It is set against the backdrop of the early twentieth century when the British were exploiting the poor and the country was also fighting against its own social issues namely classism, casteism, and untouchability. What happens when all these struggles reach a national level?

King Pratapaditya of Yashohar despises everyone—his children, his subjects, and his bahurani (daughter-in-law) most of all. When Surma married the king’s son Udayaditya, she had no idea that her life would be made a living hell by her father-in-law. But Surma is not alone in her misery. She has developed a close friendship with Vibha, the daughter of King Pratapaditya, who is distraught because her father has ordered the death of her husband.
