In February of 1999, 26-year-old U.S. Naval Submarine Officer Cameron Thurman set out from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to Yokosuka, Japan, aboard a 32-foot sailboat. Cameron was accompanied by a crew of two complete strangers: Japanese free-spirit and surfer Hiroki, and Polish family man Charlie. Charlie was the only one of the trio with any significant sailing experience. It was a journey intended to take less than 30 days; it would stretch on for ...

George Hamilton was the surgeon assigned to the frigate Pandora. The British Admiralty ordered the ship to the Pacific to arrest the Bounty mutineers and bring them back to England for trial. The commander, Captain Edward Edwards, also was ordered to chart the passage between Australia and New Guinea. While Edwards managed to arrest the mutineers still on Tahiti, he sank the Pandora on a reef near Australia. Hamilton tells this story and also the story of the crew's fate after the Pandora sank. The Voyage Out is Virginia Woolf's haunting tale about a naïve young woman's sea voyage from London to a small resort on the South American coast. In symbolic, lyrical, and intoxicating prose, her outward journey begins to mirror her internal voyage into adulthood as she searches for her personal identity, grapples with love, and learns how to face life intellectually and emotionally. Its wit and exquisiteness, and its profound depth and insight into humanity, will capture the imagination of the listener.

In August 1913, the Karluk, flagship of Vilhjalmar Stefansson’s Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913–16, became trapped in the ice while sailing to Herschel Island near the northern Alaska/Yukon border.
