Although A.E.W. Mason is perhaps best known for his adventure novel The Four Feathers, his literary prowess extends far beyond that single work. In Running Water, published in 1907, he crafts a captivating tale of romantic adventure set against the stunning backdrop of the high Alps, near Mont Blanc. Captain Hilary Chayne, fresh from four years of army service along the shores of the Red Sea, yearns for the exhilarating world of mountaineering—the ice, the rock, and the camaraderie that comes with it. On May 28, 1914, the RMS Empress of Ireland began her 192nd trip across the Atlantic from Quebec City, Canada, en route to Liverpool, England, carrying 1,056 passengers and a crew of 423. In the early hours of May 29, fog descended on the St. Lawrence River, and the ocean liner was rammed by the Storstad, a Norwegian coal ship. In the fourteen minutes it took for the Empress of Ireland to sink, there was time to launch only four of the forty lifeboats, and rather than women and children first, it was everyone for themselves.

But how it gets from the ground to your glass is far more complex than you might think. Is it safe to drink tap water? Should you feel guilty buying bottled water? Is your water vulnerable to terrorist attacks? With springs running dry and reservoirs emptying, where is your water going to come from in the future? In Drinking Water, Duke professor James Salzman shows how drinking water highlights the most pressing issues of our time.

Set against the backdrop of the Age of Exploration, Black Flags, Blue Waters reveals the dramatic and surprising history of American piracy's "Golden Age" when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and beyond. Best-selling author Eric Jay Dolin illustrates how American colonists at first supported these outrageous pirates in an early display of solidarity against the Crown, and then violently opposed them. Upending popular misconceptions and cartoonish stereotypes, Dolin provides this wholly original account of these seafaring outlaws.

For this season, we're focusing on the South Platte River in Colorado, because it's a resource that 4.5 million people rely on every day. For most of us, access to clean drinking water is a given, but our relationship with the natural environment is far more intimate-- whether you know it or not. With a growing population, increasingly destructive wildfires, and changing climates, big decisions are being made about the future of this finite ...
