Morgan Winters wants an ordinary life: A job at a bookstore, an apartment she can barely afford, and a healthy amount of existential dread. Zumindest die Identität ist rasch geklärt: Es handelt sich um Klaus von Raboisen, den steinreichen Spross einer Adelsfamilie, der eine Villa in List besitzt. Seine Ehefrau Charlotte ist Politikerin, weshalb die Ermittlungen sofort im Fokus der Öffentlichkeit stehen.

Eine vermögende Witwe wird erdrosselt aufgefunden. Eigentlich müsste der Täter per DNA-Analyse schnell zu überführen sein, weshalb Hauptkommissar Erik Wolf auf eine rasche Lösung hofft. Mamma Carlotta jedoch, seine italienische Schwiegermutter, die derzeit zu Besuch ist, hält wenig von solchen modernen Ermittlungsmethoden. Viel lieber verlässt sie sich auf ihre weibliche Intuition. Mit italienischem Charme und zum Schreck der Beamten mischt sie sich in die Ermittlungen ein. Dabei bringt sie sich selbst in Lebensgefahr.

Durch Zufall entdeckt Till Lorentzen in der Schaltzentrale der Nordsee-Raffinerie Wilhelmshaven, dass das System von außen kurzfristig fremdbestimmt wird. Kurze Zeit später ist er tot. Ein Unfall? When a traveling carnival arrives in Hollowbeck, it promises magic and mayhem. It's also an opportunity for Morgan to find someone who can transform her brother, Ruiner, back into a human—he's a little tired of being a talking cat, and she's a little tired of cleaning his litter box. Things look promising until the curtains rise on rehearsal night to reveal Ruiner sitting on the lifeless body of the wizard who promised to help him.
