Il Principe Felice è una grande statua che si erge sopra una collina. Ricoperta da foglie d'oro e pietre preziose, è il simbolo della città ed è profondamente amata dai suoi abitanti. Una notte una rondinella si rifugia ai piedi del Principe, il quale le racconta che durante la sua vita ha sempre ignorato le miserie della città, avendo vissuto all'interno del palazzo. La novella, che fa parte di una raccolta di fiabe (Il principe felice e gli altri racconti) pubblicata da Oscar Wilde nel 1888, narra la vicenda di un giovane studente alla ricerca di una rosa rossa da regalare alla sua amata e di un usignolo che decide di aiutarlo. Dopo diversi tentativi infruttuosi, l'uccellino trova un cespuglio di rose rosse che però hanno perso la loro colorazione a causa del freddo inverno. Così il cespuglio suggerisce all'usignolo di colorare una rosa col suo sangue.

Un giovane studente sta cercando una rosa rossa da regalare alla sua amata ma, ahimè, non riesce a trovarla in nessun modo. Un piccolo e gentile usignolo, emozionato dalla sua storia, decide di aiutarlo, ma anche la sua ricerca è infruttuosa. È ormai inverno e le rose sono tutte sbiadite a causa del freddo intenso.
