The colony planet of Fremont was supposed to be free of all genetically altered beings - a new home for a pure race. So when Chelo and her brother, Joseph, along with two other genetically altered teenagers, were abandoned on Fremont, they were not welcome. They vowed to get off the planet by any means necessary. Joseph and the others managed to escape, but Chelo was left behind with her new-found love, forced to live underground.

Reed Treston is a man without purpose. His war is over, his friends have left, and now he runs a lonely watch with his sister, policing people with powers beyond those of normal humans. When the government intercepts a message that has links to his past, Reed finds himself stirred into action. His path leads him across continents and through countless lies, to a city he has not seen in years - Rome, Italy - and a confrontation with a threat that could destroy a nation.

They had a doorway into the past. But it didn't just open on a specific place on a certain day. There was a sort of flutter, and it caused spatial drift and temporal spread. Two probes might go through together on the 21st-century side but come out miles and years apart on the Silurian side. So, when the second of two people going through a portal into the past is lost, the first feels an abstract guilt that eats into her pleasure at having traveled through time.
