Der 27. September - für Christa Wolf ein besonderes Datum. 1960 folgte die Autorin dem Aufruf der Zeitschrift "Istwestija", diesen Tag in Worte zu fassen. Fasziniert von der "Bedeutung, die ein durchschnittlicher Tag bekommt, wenn man wahrnimmt, wie viele Lebenslinien in ihm zusammenlaufen", hielt sie von da an jedes Jahr am 27. September ihre Erlebnisse, Gefühle und Gedanken fest.

Suzette Mullen had been raised to play it safe—and she hated causing others pain. With college and law degrees, a kind and successful husband, two thriving adult sons, and an ocean-view vacation home, she lived a life many people would envy. But beneath the happy facade was a woman who watched her friends walk boldly through their lives and wondered what was holding her back from doing the same.

At the height of the Great Depression, Sam Babb, the charismatic basketball coach of tiny Oklahoma Presbyterian College, began dreaming. Like so many others, he wanted a reason to have hope. Traveling from farm to farm, he recruited talented, hardworking young women and offered them a chance at a better life: a free college education if they would come play for his basketball team, the Cardinals. Despite their fears of leaving home and the sacrifices faced by their families, the women followed Babb and his dream.
