Sadie Katz and Cleo Chapman have been rivals since birth. Literally. 4학년을 맞은 밀드레드는 어서 이번 학기가 지나갔으면 좋겠다고 생각했어요. 이번 학기만 마치면 졸업반인 5학년이 되어 멋진 교복을 입을 수 있고, 4학년 마지막 날에는 학년 전체 1등과 학생 대표를 정하는 시상식도 하거든요. 모드는 단체 생활을 잘 하는 사람에게 주는 팀스피릿상을 받고 싶어 해요. 한편 밀드레드는 다음 해 학생 대표가 되고 싶다고 생각하죠. "난 내년에 학생 대표로 뽑히고 싶어." 밀드레드가 수줍게 이야기하자 모드는 그만 웃음을 참지 못했어요.

겨울 학기가 시작된 첫날, 대강당에 모인 학생들에게 캐클 교장 선생님이 엄청난 소식을 전해주었어요. 모든 마법학교들이 참가하는 수영장 경연 대회에서 우승하면, 학교에 실내 수영장이 생긴다는 소식이었지요. 하지만 들뜬 것도 잠시, 밀드레드는 금방 우울해지고 말았어요. 선생님들이 졸업반이 된 밀드레드에게 동쪽 별관 등불지기라는 새로운 임무를 맡겼거든요. 깜깜한 밤에 불을 켜고, 오싹한 새벽에 불을 꺼야 한다는 사실에 밀드레드는 친구들에게 투덜거렸답니다.
