Magneto, the X-Men's oldest, deadliest foe, has taken over the entire island of Manhattan and declared it a haven for mutants. Ruled by Magneto and his Acolytes and enforced by reprogrammed Sentinels - powerful, giant robots - the haven is the first step in Magneto's ultimate goal of world domination: the Mutant Empire. Now, only the X-Men stand between Magneto and that goal. But the road to victory will not be an easy one, as half the X-Men are trapped in space - and mutants from all over the world are flocking to Manhattan and taking Magneto's side against the X-Men.

Professor X, the X-Men's founder and mentor, and Shi'ar Empress Lilandra have been forced to love each other from afar - he has to remain on Earth to lead the X-Men, and she must stay with the Shi'ar to run the empire. Now, Lilandra must turn to the X-Men for help against a threat to her domain - and possibly the Earth as well. Shi'ar scientists have learned of a creature that devours galaxies and is heading toward Shi'ar space.

It has been months since Logan escaped the secret research complex in the Canadian Rockies where he was held captive, breaking through punishing psychological conditioning, slaughtering all those who stood in his way, and fleeing into the wilderness. Now, at the clandestine agency known as Department K, the director of the Weapon X program decides it's time to reclaim the most successful experiment for his group.

There's less than one week to go in the run-up to the nation's next general presidential election - a heated political contest pitting the incumbent president against a popular challenger. But all bets are off when a heinous act of domestic terrorism results in a young boy being held hostage before the eyes of America...with the ultimate demands to result in nothing short of changing the face of history. As a nationwide investigation into the boy's possible whereabouts is quickly mobilized, military brass requests that the mutant Wolverine become involved as well.
