Elk mens heeft behoefte aan moraal. De Tien geboden verschaften die lange tijd en gaven richting aan ons handelen. Zijn deze leefregels uit een premoderne samenleving nog nuttig voor nu en wat was de oorspronkelijke betekenis? Maarten van Buuren en Hans Achterhuis zoeken in tien colleges van een uur naar hedendaagse antwoorden op deze vragen. Bij de geboden "Gij zult niet doden" en "Gij zult niet stelen" kan iedereen zich wel wat voorstellen.

De moderne mens is een paradoxaal wezen dat - hoe rationeel ook - bij de diepste levensbeslissingen liever op het gevoel dan op de rede terugvalt. Hij doorziet de natuur wetenschappelijk, maar laat zich even graag door haar overweldigen. Hij kan (bijna) alles, maar weet niet of hij ook alles mág. In deze collegeserie laat Ger Groot zien welke filosofische ideeën de mens gevormd hebben tot het wezen dat hij nu is. In veel muziekwerken resoneren filosofische gedachten mee die deze ontwikkeling illustreren.

"Waarom zou niet iedereen een kunstwerk van zijn leven kunnen maken?" vroeg de Franse filosoof Michel Foucault zich 25 jaar geleden af. Wij herkennen ons nog steeds in deze vraag nu de grote idealen en utopieën zijn verbleekt. Denkers en schrijvers verschillen echter van mening over de invulling daarvan. Van een krachtige en optimistische levensvisie tot sceptisch en op het sombere af.

Godsdienstfilosofie beargumenteerd, met aandacht voor de grote denkers, door "Buitenhof"-columnist en auteur van de bestseller "Het Atheïstisch Manifest" Herman Philipse. Atheïsme als wereldbeschouwing is ouder dan de meeste mensen denken. Het wordt vaak gezien als een 20e eeuws fenomeen, maar het bestond al onder de oude Chinezen en de Grieken. In een tijd van toenemende waarheidsclaims is de tijd rijp voor een grondige analyse van godsgeloof en atheïsme.

Liefde, erotiek en seksualiteit zijn universele thema’s. Toch zijn er grote culturele verschillen in de manier waarop mensen deze thema’s vormgeven in hun dagelijks leven, hun gebruiken, hun kunst en hun wetgeving. En in veel gebieden lijkt de vorm en de ervaring van erotiek te veranderen, wat soms tot grote spanningen leidt. In deze serie van tien hoorcolleges wordt de luisteraar meegenomen op een fascinerende reis door verschillende culturen en filosofieën: van de vroege Griekse en Babylonische naar die van Azië, Afrika en Europa tot het moderne Westen.

Hoe ordent de mens zijn denken? Filosofen hebben in de loop van de geschiedenis veel nagedacht over deze vraag. Kunnen we iets opsteken van systematische analyse om onze eigen denkfouten en dwalingen te ondervangen? Voorbeelden van gerechtelijke dwalingen, zoals de veroordeling van Lucia de Berk tot levenslange gevangenisstraf in 2004 en 2007, laten zien hoe zelfs hoogopgeleide rechters en raadsheren vormen van cognitieve verblinding kunnen vertonen.
