This 1883 book contains chapters on ancient costumes, Byzantine and Romanesque art, David and his school, modern schools of Europe, drawing, color, decorative painting, finish, choice of subject, composition of decorative and historical pictures, and composition of incident pictures. Edward Armitage RA (1817 – 1896) was an English painter of the Victorian era whose work focused on historical, classical and biblical subjects. Het nationalisme beheerst sinds twee eeuwen het Europese politieke denken. Het is een onderwerp waarbij iedereen zich betrokken voelt en waarover iedereen een mening heeft. Het leidt tot hevige debatten en geschillen in de samenleving. Vaak worden begrippen als "natie" en "nationalisme" daarbij in tegenstrijdige en uiteenlopende betekenissen gebruikt en met een gebrekkige kennis over de cultuurhistorische achtergronden. Joep Leerssen zet in dit hoorcollege de zaken op een rij.

Ruim vier eeuwen geleden zwermden Nederlandse schepen en hun bemanningen uit over de wereldzeeën. Ze voeren naar het noorden, over de Atlantische Oceaan naar het westen en rond Kaap Hoorn en voorbij Kaap de Goede Hoop naar Azië. Ze dreven handel, gingen de strijd aan met Europese concurrenten, onderwierpen goed- of kwaadschiks inheemse volken en stichtten nederzettingen en koloniën. Het vervoer van goederen en mensen via het water was in veel opzichten bepalend voor de ontwikkeling van scheepstypen, navigatiemiddelen en handelsnetwerken.

Rusland in de moderne tijd maakte een aantal rigoureuze transities door. Van een overwegend agrarisch Tsarenrijk naar een geïndustrialiseerde Socialistische heilstaat. Van Stalins totalitaire staat naar de meer open politiek van Chroetsjov. En uiteindelijk van de paranoïde Breshnev naar de Perestroika van Gorbatsjov. Henk Kern laat het college beginnen in de Tsarentijd in de 19e eeuw en toont hoe Rusland zich als Soviet-Unie ontwikkelt tot de tweede wereldmacht tijdens de Koude Oorlog.

In zijn hoorcollege neemt Herman Beliën ons op geheel eigen wijze mee door de geschiedenis van het ontstaan van Nederland als eenheidsstaat. In twaalf hoofdstukken maakt hij korte metten met bestaande opvattingen over onze 'tolerantie', de mythen rond de onafhankelijkheidsstrijd tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog en de historische invloed van Nederland in Europa en de rest van de wereld. Een uiterst scherpe en onderhoudende terugblik op de staat- en natievorming van de Nederlanden door de eeuwen heen.

Eeuwenlang vormden de Middeleeuwen een synoniem voor ongeletterdheid, barbarij en wreedheid. In de moderne tijd heeft zich daarnaast een veel positiever beeld ontwikkeld. Dan roepen de Middeleeuwen gedachten op aan ongebonden vrijheid, zuivere natuur, spontaniteit en ongekunstelde schoonheid. In dit college belicht de vooraanstaande wetenschapper Herman Pleij deze buitengewoon interessante periode uit onze beschavingsgeschiedenis zowel vanuit historisch-letterkundig als cultuur-historisch perspectief.
