Big Brother is watching you.... 1984 is the year in which it happens. The world is divided into three superstates. In Oceania, the Party’s power is absolute. Every action, word, gesture and thought is monitored under the watchful eye of Big Brother and the Thought Police. In the Ministry of Truth, the Party’s department for propaganda, Winston Smith’s job is to edit the past. Over time, the impulse to escape the machine and live independently takes hold of him and he embarks on a secret and forbidden love affair.

Animal Farm is George Orwell's great socio-political allegory set in a farmyard where the animals decide to seize the farmer's land and create a co-operative that reaps the benefits of their combined labours. However, as with all great political plans, some animals see a bigger share of the rewards than others and the animals start to question their supposed utopia.

1984 is a novel by the British author George Orwell in 1949. The narrative unfolds in an imagined future when most of the world has fallen prey to omnipresent government surveillance, propaganda, and endless war. Great Britain has become a province of the super state Oceania, which is ruled by the Party, whose leader is called Big Brother. The Party employs the Thought Police to persecute individuality and independent thinking. Winston Smith, the protagonist, is an ordinary worker who secretly despises the Party and dreams of rebellion. 

Intimidated by her father, the rector of Knype Hill, Dorothy performs her submissive roles of dutiful daughter and bullied housekeeper. Her thoughts are taken up with the costumes she is making for the church school play, by the hopelessness of preaching to the poor and by debts she cannot pay in 1930s Depression England. Suddenly her routine shatters and Dorothy finds herself down and out in London. She is wearing silk stockings, has money in her pocket and cannot remember her name. 

Only four years after publishing his fable Animal Farm, a biting satire of Joseph Stalin’s horrific regime of terror, George Orwell turned his attention to the future. But his next book was to be no satire, no fable. What emerged from Orwell’s pen in 1949 was the most grimly dystopian novel ever written: 1984.

In Oceania, one of three totalitarian states that rule the world, Big Brother is watching. The Thought Police are listening. Reality is defined by the Party. In defiance of the State, he falls into a criminal love affair with his coworker Julia. But it isn’t until he joins the Brotherhood, an underground network of revolutionaries, that Winston discovers how high the cost of freedom may be. 

Burmese Days describes corruption and imperial bigotry in a society where, 'after all, natives were natives'. When Flory, a white timber merchant, befriends Indian Dr Veraswami, he defies this orthodoxy. The doctor is in danger: U Po Kyin, a corrupt magistrate, is plotting his downfall. The only thing that can save him is membership of the all-white Club, and Flory can help. Flory's life is changed further by the arrival of beautiful Elizabeth Lackersteen from Paris, who offers an escape from loneliness and the 'lie' of colonial life.

Gordon Comstock loathes dull, middle-class respectability and worship of money. He gives up a 'good job' in advertising to work part-time in a bookshop, giving him more time to write. But he slides instead into a self-induced poverty that destroys his creativity and his spirit. Only Rosemary, ever-faithful Rosemary, has the strength to challenge his commitment to his chosen way of life.

Orwells Roman über die Zerstörung des Menschen durch eine perfekte Staatsmaschinerie ist längst zu einer scheinbar nicht mehr erklärungsbedürftigen Metapher für totalitäre Verhältnisse geworden. Mit atemberaubender Unerbittlichkeit zeichnet der Autor das erschreckende Bild eines Staates, der seine Bürger ständig überwacht und nicht nur ihr Denken, sondern auch die Vergangenheit manipuliert.

Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth in London, chief city of Airstrip One. Big Brother stares out from every poster and the Thought Police uncover each act of betrayal. When Winston finds love with Julia, he discovers that life does not have to be dull and deadening and awakens to new possibilities. Despite the police helicopters that hover and circle overhead, Winston and Julia begin to question the Party.

L'azione si svolge in un futuro prossimo del mondo (l'anno 1984) in cui il potere si concentra in tre immensi superstati: Oceania, Eurasia ed Estasia. Al vertice del potere politico in Oceania c'è il Grande Fratello, onnisciente e infallibile, che nessuno ha visto di persona ma di cui ovunque sono visibili grandi manifesti. Il Ministero della Verità, nel quale lavora il personaggio principale, Smith, ha il compito di censurare libri e giornali non in linea con la politica ufficiale, di alterare la storia e di ridurre le possibilità espressive della lingua. 

After years of exploitation, neglect, and despair, the animals of Manor Farm revolt. They drive owner Mr. Jones off the land and rechristen the property Animal Farm, a utopia of equality and mutual support. But Napoleon, a young boar who assumes command after the rebellion, is hungry for power. And as the pigs consolidate control, all the good intentions of Animal Farm are crushed by a new and inevitable tyranny. 

Un racconto allegorico che narra la ribellione degli animali di una fattoria contro il proprietario Jones. Guidati dal Vecchio Maggiore, un maiale saggio e anziano (rappresenta Lenin), riusciranno a conquistare la fattoria e a creare una società dove tutti sono uguali. Ma dopo pochi giorni il Vecchio Maggiore morirà e sarà sostituito da un altro maiale, l’opportunista e despota Napoleon (rappresenta Stalin), che prenderà il sopravvento su Palla di Neve, un maiale rivoluzionario e sincero (Trockij).

Questa "Antologia" racchiude i due romanzi più famosi di George Orwell, "1984" e "La fattoria degli animali", i quali rispecchiano tutta la Distopia di un mondo che, piano piano ma inesorabilmente, si sta materializzando nell'era attuale. Due romanzi senza tempo, che offrono un chiaro spaccato del futuro distopico a cui, purtroppo, il mondo sta andando incontro.

La satira classica della rivoluzione russa di George Orwell è una parte intima della nostra cultura contemporanea, citata così spesso che tendiamo a dimenticare chi ha scritto le parole originali. È un resoconto della coraggiosa lotta che trasforma la fattoria terriera del signor Jones in fattoria degli animali, una società interamente democratica costruita sul credo che tutti gli animali sono creati uguali. Per intelligenza, i maiali Napoleone, Squealer e Palla di neve emergono come leader della nuova comunità in una sottile evoluzione che porta una insidiosa familiarità.

"La fattoria degli animali" voleva essere, nelle intenzioni dell'autore, una realistica allegoria della Russia Sovietica, dominata da Stalin. La cacciata dell'uomo avrebbe dovuto portare tra gli animali della fattoria liberata alla realizzazione di quei valori di egualitarismo, fratellanza e libertà che sono il manifesto ideologico dell'illuminismo e da cui hanno tratto la loro origine marxismo, socialismo, comunismo. Nel libro viene ben rappresentato come nella realtà la salita al potere da parte dei nuovi suonatori non determinerà affatto il cambiamento della musica, tutt'altro.

"Fino a che non diventeranno coscienti del loro potere, non saranno mai capaci di ribellarsi e, fino a che non saranno liberati, non diventeranno mai coscienti del loro potere." Pubblicato nel 1949, il libro offre la visione da incubo del satirista politico George Orwell di un mondo totalitario e burocratico e il tentativo di un povero uomo di trovare l'individualità. Il genio del romanzo è la presenza di Orwell nella vita moderna - l'ubiquità della televisione, la distorsione del linguaggio - e la sua capacità di costruire una versione così completa dell'inferno. Lettura obbligatoria per gli studenti da quando è stata pubblicata, si colloca tra i romanzi più terrificanti mai scritti.
