In Batavia hat sich jedoch viel verändert. Der Chinese Wang Hu hat die Geschäfte des Holländers Pieter de Bruyn übernommen. Als er erfährt, dass Dr. Vandersteen zurück in Batavia ist, lässt er ihn gefangen nehmen. Von ihm will er erfahren, was mit de Bruyn geschehen ist.

In der Hoffnung, dass sie dadurch ihre Suche nach weiteren Hinweisen auf Lemuria ungehindert fortsetzen können. Doch de Bruyn gibt nicht auf und verfolgt die Nautilus mit einem Dampfschiff. Er hat das gleiche Ziel. Als die Nautilus das Atoll North Keeling erreicht, entdecken sie dort einen Schiffbrüchigen, der von Männern in glänzenden Anzügen berichtet, die aus einem Krater gekommen sind.

Pieter de Bruyn und seine Kumpane sind Gefangene der Lemurer. Sie versuchen zu fliehen, wissen jedoch nicht, dass eine unbekannte Seuche unter den Lemurern ausgebrochen ist, die rasch um sich greift.
