Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is known universally for the gentle charm of Le Petit Prince, but it is this book, Land of Men - known originally in English as Wind, Sand and Stars - which is his masterpiece. First published in 1939, it documents Saint-Exupéry's life as a pilot in the pioneering days of long-distance flying and in particular his experiences as a pilot transporting mail across countries, across continents.

"The Little Prince" was published in 1943 by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It is a poetic tale in which a pilot strands in the desert and meets a young prince fallen to Earth from a tiny asteroid. The story is philosophical and includes social criticism, remarking on the strangeness of the adult world. När vapenstilleståndet juni 1940 lämnade han Frankrike för New York i syfte att föra USA i kriget och var en av de röster oppositionen. Drömmar om åtgärden slutligen gick han en enhet av fotografisk spaning för avstigning av Provence under våren 1944. Han försvann till sjöss med sin plan under sitt uppdrag den 31 juli 1944.
