Trần Diệu Lan, who was born in 1920, was forced to flee her family farm with her six children during the Land Reform as the Communist government rose in the North.

In 1969, two sisters from rural Việt Nam leave their parents’ home and travel to the bustling city of Sài Gòn. Soon their lives are swept up in the unstoppable flames of a war that is blazing through their country. They begin working as ‘bar girls’ in one of the drinking dens frequented by American GIs, forced to accept that survival now might mean compromising the values they once treasured. Decades later, two men wander through the streets and marketplaces of a very different Sài Gòn.

Vietnam, 1969: Die Schwestern Trang und Quỳnh wachsen in einem Dorf auf, wo sie die Reisfelder ihrer verarmten Eltern bestellen. Als sie hören, in Saigon wäre es leicht, Arbeit zu finden, machen sich die jungen Frauen auf den Weg. In Saigon lernt Trang einen amerikanischen Soldaten kennen und stürzt sich in den Wirren des Krieges in eine Affäre, die nicht ohne Folgen bleibt.

Poi una raffica di colpi, e il fiume che si tinge di rosso… Trang ha ancora negli occhi l’ultimo bombardamento che ha devastato il suo villaggio, lasciando la propria famiglia senza più niente. E allora lei e la sorella Quỳnh decidono di andare a Saigon, dove per ragazze carine come loro è facile guadagnare. Basta sedersi nei bar a bere con gli americani.

Un paese in guerra. Una famiglia divisa. Una storia indimenticabile di coraggio e speranza. Dal loro rifugio sulle montagne, la piccola Huong e sua nonna Dieu Lan sentono il rombo dei bombardieri americani e scorgono il bagliore degli incendi che stanno devastando Hanoi. Fino a quel momento, per Huong la guerra è stata l'ombra che ha risucchiato i suoi genitori, e adesso quell'ombra sta avvolgendo anche lei e la nonna. Tornate in città, scoprono che la loro casa è completamente distrutta, eppure non si scoraggiano e decidono di ricostruirla, mattone dopo mattone. 

Une envoûtante saga familiale sur les effets dévastateurs de la guerre. Novembre 1972, Hanoi. Face aux rumeurs d'offensive américaine, Huong et sa grand-mère, Dieu Lan, décident d'abandonner la capitale pour rejoindre les campagnes vietnamiennes. Un retour qui ravive le souvenir du départ de Dieu Lan, vingt ans plus tôt, chassée de la ferme familiale par la réforme agraire du gouvernement communiste nouvellement au pouvoir.
