FBI Special Agent Emily Slate is no stranger to tragedy. After losing her husband three months ago, then botching the biggest case of her career, she’s barely escaped a full suspension. Special Agent Emily Slate is a woman on the hunt. After returning home from the town of Stillwater, she’s more haunted than ever. Ghosts she thought she’d laid to rest have suddenly reared their heads, and the only person who can answer her questions has disappeared. Meanwhile, a Federal Judge’s daughter is reported missing and it’s up to Emily to find her. As she dives into the case, she discovers a clever and twisted mind working against her and every minute that passes could mean it’s too late for his victims.

A string of arson cases brings Emily to the historic city of Charleston right as she’s in the middle of trying to find the woman who killed her husband. Her personal investigation will have to wait, however, because the local community is on edge, having already lost two firefighters in these tragedies. But before she can get very far, more blazes erupt throughout the city, causing a panic within the ranks.

Emily’s most recent case brings her to a sleepy New York town to investigate the gruesome death of a fellow FBI agent. Except when she arrives, Emily discovers this was no home invasion gone wrong. This was a calculated kill, undertaken by a disturbed and brutal individual. As Emily begins her investigation, the trail leads to a local author, who the killer is using as inspiration for his kills; copying details from the author’s books as templates on how to kill his victims.
