Het universum is zo'n goede plek nog niet om te leven. Tuurlijk, het omvat alle ruimte, tijd, materie en energie en alle mensen, inclusief jijzelf, en alle informatie, zoals dit boek. Fascinerend! Maar het werkt de boel ook gewoon ontzettend tegen.

Het meeslepende verhaal van een van de grootste vulkaanuitbarstingen aller tijden. In april 1815 vond op het eiland Soembawa, in het toenmalige Nederlands-Indië, de grootste vulkaanuitbarsting sinds mensenheugenis plaats. Wie het heden én de toekomst wil begrijpen, kan niet om de geschiedenis heen. Europa heeft een lange en roerige voorgeschiedenis met zijn buren. Waar de geografische grenzen al sinds mensenheugenis vastliggen, zijn de door de mens getrokken staatsgrenzen vrijwel voortdurend verschoven. Kijk maar naar Polen, het 'land op wieltjes' dat heen en weer schoof en zelfs lange tijd van de kaart verdween. Of naar het koloniale tijdperk, waarin de Europeanen in Afrika, Azië en het Midden-Oosten de dienst uitmaakten en willekeurig grenzen trokken, wat leidde tot gruwelijke oorlogen. De randen van Europa zijn al veel langer rafelig.
