As a kid I used to watch Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5 and play Halo so much I could quote them all. Now everything that's being released in books and movies and games is dark, gritty, and everyone is some type of villain. The heroes are gone. The good guys are gone. Everything is a shade of depressing gray.
Star Trek doesn't understand science anymore. Star Wars has a dumb Thrawn. Halo's Master Chief is just a propaganda monster, and Babylon 5 can't find a way to reboot itself after 3 failed tries. And don't even get me started on Stargate.
I finally decided if I wanted more of what we once had as fans, then I would have to write it myself. So my Star Force universe is the next huge franchise story in what niche? I used to think Space Opera meant Star Wars, now I'm not so sure. I just call it 'cool space stuff' and leave it at that.
So if you want cool space stuff with storylines you can't predict and good guys being legit good guys, let's just say the force is strong with this author and he's not going to forget that scifi is about details, scope, technology, and everything cool under the sun with a little character interaction added in on the side.
Nobody wants to see a moody Spock singing or fat Ahsoka that can barely move or AIs so important that they have to be protected at all costs...only to be killed every 7 years on purpose?
Stuff like that makes my head explode. If it does yours too, then dive into Star Force or Starship Fleet Commander for some badly needed therapy. Logic in science fiction is not optional. It's mandatory.
And where did the Star Trek miniskirts go in Strange New Worlds? Seriously?
