Andy Boot is one of those writers you’ve probably not really heard of, but has actually been involved with writing some of the best-selling series of the last half-century. The reason for this is simple: as well as two novels under his own name, and seven non-fiction books, he has also written ten novels under the name Don Pendleton and eighteen under the name James Axler. From 1998 to 2014 he worked for Gold Eagle books, a division of Harlequin, where he was responsible for eight novels in the series ‘The Executioner’, and eighteen in the series ‘Deathlands’. The latter series ran from 1987 to 2016, and the former from 1969 to 2016, when Gold Eagle was wound up after the sale of Harlequin. Confusingly, as his first two publishers for his own name felt 'Andy' wasn't serious enough, he also has an Amazon page as 'Andrew' Boot (have a look..). Confused? He is... Anyhow, prior to this he had been a journalist for the music press and national newspapers and magazine, including a two-and-a-half year stint on ‘Kerrang!’, and had then written three non-fiction books on true crime and psychic phenomena, and the first book to examine British horror cinema that was solely about Hammer. Subsequently, he then published a book about the prog rock band Caravan, a history of Police Dogs in the UK, and a look at the use of mythology, history and fantastic fiction in heavy metal. Of the two novels under his own name, one was a hardboiled crime thriller and the other the first of a series created for Rebellion’s Abaddon imprint, where he was series launch consultant, and created/co-created the initial four worlds for their fiction. Not one for the spotlight (and a candidate for several ‘worst career decision ever’ awards), he has also worked as a ghostwriter for several memoir and novel projects, and was a creative writing tutor in further education for a decade. In TV and audio he also worked as a development writer for documentary, unscripted and audio theatre. He has also dabbled in self-publishing to try out ‘Rambo and Win’, a personal project that highlights his enduring love of his dogs (that’s Rambo in the photo). Finally, he has found writing this in the third person a bit odd… does he talk about himself in this manner all the time??
